Magister
Magister is a software tool, developed by computer scientists from Strathclyde Univeristy, Professor Fabio Crestani and Dr Richard Bache in collaboration with Professor David Canter and Dr Donna Youngs, for translating free text material into numerical data files thereby allowing quantitative analysis of any material in unstructured form.
Magister stands for Matrix Generator Implementing Stemming and Tokenising for Effective Retrieval. It reads in a CSV (Comma Separated Value) file containing free text descriptions of incidents (such as crimes) and outputs a CSV file containing a data matrix giving the occurrence of lexical tokens (words or phrases) found in each piece of text.
